Bluefield University Fine Arts Community School Announces Summer 2019 Courses

Dedicated to providing quality fine arts instruction to the community since 1993, BU’s Fine Arts Community School (FACS) is a community service outreach program that enables local families and students of all ages and interests, including home-schoolers, to explore and study the arts with the guidance of mentors and professionals who have appropriate training and experience. Expanding beyond the arts in recent years, FACS also offers training in a variety of other trades and skills to reach an even broader audience to those who enjoy learning and experiencing new interests.

Multiple classes and workshops are available on the FACS schedule, including opportunities in basket making, a jazz improvisation workshop, and a yoga camp all detailed below in chronological order.

BEGINNER’S CROCHET CLASS

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Learn how to crochet a scarf with no experience needed. This course is designed for the beginning student. You will learn the basics of crochet and pattern reading needed to complete this project as well as others.

DATES AND TIMES

OPTION ONE: June 3-7, 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

OPTION TWO: July 8-12, 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

AGES: Open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult)

COST: $100 (materials included) + $25 registration fee

“HANDS ON APPALACHIAN ARTS” (BASKET MAKING AND ART CAMP)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Join us at this brand-new combined basket and art camp. Campers will learn one of the oldest forms of Appalachian Art: Basket making, while making an Appalachian half-bushel basket. We will continue with the Appalachian theme learning watercolor painting. Using visual observation, the campers will create an 11×14 watercolor landscape of Appalachian scenery. Enjoy the “Hands on Appalachian Arts” during this exciting summer camp.

WRITING CAMP

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This camp is designed to help prepare students for writing in middle school, high school, and college. Experience writing in a fun, creative, non-judgmental environment to help prepare you for future writing courses. Learn writing steps and rules that will help you gain confidence as you prepare for those writing assignments. The instructor will provide individual help as needed for different skill levels.

TAE KWON DO

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Master Kasey Addair will be teaching self-defense and Tae Kwon Do. The classes will offer physical fighting skills and cardio exercise. There will be methods shown to enhance a perseverance mindset through kata and combinations. The classes will offer additional skill sets from Tae Kwon Do and will have relaxing meditation techniques of Tai Chi Chuan as well as basic movements for better balance and peace.

BEGINNER AND INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED DANCE CAMPS

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Beginners will learn basic dance moves and combinations and perform for parents at the end of the week. Intermediate/Advanced is for those who have basic dance knowledge who will be taught tap, jazz, musical theater, and how to succeed in dance auditions.

July 15-19, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. (Beginners for ages 8-13)

July 15-19, 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Intermediate/Advanced for ages 14-22)

COST: $75 + $25 registration fee (Beginners); $85 + $25 registration fee (Intermediate/Advanced)

YOGA CAMP

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Is yoga just a way to twist your body into a pretzel? What in the world does “Namaste” mean anyway? Find the answers to these questions when you sign up for the Yoga Camp. Whether you are a newbie to the world of fitness, a history buff, a lover of all things peaceful, or an all-around seasonal yogi- you will most assuredly gain something form this course. We will begin with the history of yoga and move through the philosophy, types, and applications of yoga in the daily life. It is so much more than exercise. You will learn various postures as well as how to use such techniques as breathing and focused thought to improve your mental health. This is all introductory, so you have nothing to fear- no one is expected to be a guru.

JAZZ IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A unique opportunity to learn the basics of jazz improvisation this summer. A two-hour workshop conducted by BU Music Professor and nationally recognized Jazz Artist Vince Lewis. Topics will include how to improve over chord progressions, basic chord substitutions and the role of the rhythm section in a jazz combo, as well as other related subjects.

AGES: 14 to adult (limited to 12 individuals; a statement of prior musical experience would be helpful)

EXPLORING MUSIC CAMP

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Join us for a week for exploring music. Students will experience vocal percussion and group singing, enjoy playing music games, and explore different musical instruments, all while learning the basics of music and note-reading.

AGES: 7-12

COST: $100 + $25 registration fee

FLYING HIGH WITH SCIENCE CAMP

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This camp will explore many things airborne: butterflies, dragonflies, moths, Frisbees, and rockets will be experienced firsthand by campers and the principles governing their flights will be discussed. Plenty of fun and learning to go “round!”

GETTING STARTED WITH AIRBNB

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Do you have a house, apartment, cabin, or property sitting empty? Would you like to generate income from it from tourists coming to the area? Airbnb could be the right fit for you. If you’ve heard about Airbnb and have been thinking about it but have no idea HOW to start, attend this workshop.  David Hite, local Airbnb Superhost and business professor at Bluefield University will review Airbnb and how it works, how to setup an account and property, set your home up for guests, manage reservations, and build a large following of repeat visitors.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Lessons available for clarinet, flute, guitar, harp, piano, trumpet, violin and voice.

COST: $110 for 5 lessons or $190 for 10 lessons; plus a $25 registration fee. Lessons are 30 minutes each. Registration fee is due once per academic year.
