Tropical Storm Helene swept across Bluefield University today, bringing heavy rains, strong winds, and widespread power outages. While the storm caused trees to topple, damaged several automobiles, and left the campus without electricity, officials are relieved to report that students, faculty, and staff are safe.
“Although the storm caused significant disruptions, our top priority was the safety of the community,” said Steve Peterson, President of Bluefield University. “I’m grateful to report that everyone is safe, and we are quickly moving to clean up.”
Power outages, including Bluefield’s campus, have affected large portions of the region. The utility company (AEP) is working diligently to restore full power to the university and surrounding areas.
Classes were canceled for the day, and university officials are coordinating to assess the situation before determining when normal operations will resume. In the meantime, students are encouraged to avoid any areas where debris and fallen trees pose a risk.
“While the storm’s aftermath will take some time to clean up, we are thankful that everyone is safe,” Peterson added. Bluefield University will continue to update students, faculty, and staff via emails and the Ram Alert system.
