Undergraduate Admissions Process
Bluefield University will challenge you to find your passion as you earn your degree within a Christian environment.
The Admissions Process
Bluefield University is a Christ-centered University in covenant with the Baptist General Association of Virginia since its founding in 1922.
We are intentional with our commitment to the liberal arts tradition while equipping students with the necessary creative, critical, and technical skills needed for a global economy. We are privileged to live and learn at the base of East River Mountain in beautiful Southwest Virginia. Creativity thrives. Thinking abounds. Skills are honed. Spirituality is nurtured and lives are changed. Come join us!
Use the step-by-step guide below to walk through the process of becoming a student.
Admission Standards
We accept students for admission who will benefit from a personalized, Christian liberal arts education. Admission decisions are based on the academic record of the candidate, recommendations, optional test scores, and an interview (if one is required). Your extracurricular activities, work experience, and leadership qualities may also be considered.
To apply for admission to Bluefield University, each student must submit:
- A properly completed online application
- Official high school transcripts
- Official college transcripts if you have attended any colleges previously or taken dual enrollment courses
For the 2020-2021 admissions cycle, Bluefield University has made the ACT, CLT, and SAT exams optional. If you choose to take the exam and submit your score, our college code numbers are:
- University code number for SAT is 5063
- University code number for ACT is 4340
The Office of Enrollment Management uses a rolling admission policy, and decisions are made as we receive completed applications. All admissions decisions are made without regard for your religion, color, gender, national, or ethnic origin.
Next Steps for Accepted Students
Once accepted, students need to complete the following steps before enrolling in classes. Your personal admissions counselor will help you with each step.
- Transfer students need to complete a Transfer Credit Evaluation. Once complete (typically within 5 business days of your acceptance), we email the report to you as a PDF and mail a print copy. Carefully review the report; the Transfer Counselor will call you so you can ask questions about the Plan to Complete or Advising Worksheet sent with the report. This report estimates the number of hours you need to complete your intended degree program and provides a detailed list of the required courses.
- Submit a Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) so our financial aid team can prepare an initial financial aid estimate for you. We prepare additional estimates as new scholarship applications are received and new forms of aid are awarded.
- You will need to pay a one-time, $200 confirmation fee. This fee serves as your declaration to enroll at Bluefield University. Students who register for classes without submitting this confirmation fee are at risk of losing their seats in a class to students who have paid, even if the paying students registered at a later date. Our small class sizes are critical to our experience, and we use the confirmation fee as one way to preserve the small sizes of our classes. For residential students, the fee also gives them priority in housing assignments. For more information or if you have questions about this fee, please contact your personal Admissions Counselor.
- Complete a Pre-Entrance Health Packet, regardless of whether or not you intend to live on campus. We send this form to you, and you need to return it to the Office of Student Development.
- Complete a Housing and Commuter Contract. We will send this form to you digitally.
- Register for a RAM Day. This event provides a variety of opportunities for incoming students to meet other future Rams, participate in planned activities, gain an introduction to the Bluefield community, and tie up any loose ends before the start of the semester.
Probational Acceptance
Admissions counselors initially evaluate the application of each student. If a student does not meet BU’s admissions standards, the file is forwarded to the Admissions Committee for review.
Please note: The Office of Enrollment Management must receive a completed digital personal statement form and two digital reference forms before a student’s application is evaluated by the committee. If the Admissions Committee approves the student for admission, the student will be admitted as a probationary student. As part of your probational acceptance, you will be required to meet with the Director of Academic Support Services regularly during your first semester at Bluefield University. The director will work with you to develop a plan for academic success, so you begin your second semester with grades that demonstrate you can succeed as a Bluefield University student.
Freshmen Applicants
A student is considered for full acceptance if they have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
If you choose to submit standardized test scores, which may improve your financial aid award, we look for:
- A minimum SAT score of 970 (math and critical reading)
- A minimum CLT score of 62
- A minimum ACT score of 18
Students should carefully plan their high school curriculum to prepare for college. Although we do not require a specific set of high school credits, we recommend students include the following high school courses:
- 4 units of English
- 3 units of college preparatory mathematics
- 3 units of social science
- 3 units of science
- 2 units of health and physical education
- 1 unit of fine arts
- 6 units of electives
A unit is defined as a completed course.

I’m Ready
You have talked to your admissions counselor, you have been on your campus visit, and you’re ready to apply and become a student at BU. Take the next step by applying online. Then have your guidance counselor send in your transcript and SAT or ACT scores.
Transferring to Bluefield University is simple. Students wishing to transfer from another college or university will be considered for admission if they meet the following requirements:
- Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale at all colleges and universities attended if they have earned 12 completed credit hours.
- If you have earned fewer than 12 completed credit hours, you must have a high school GPA of 2.0 or higher, and you will be considered under our freshman admission standards.
We understand transfer students want to complete their bachelor’s degree in a timely manner. The Office of the Registrar completes a transcript evaluation to determine which credits will transfer, a vital component in helping you know what it will take to complete your degree. This is why:
- Bluefield University is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS); therefore, we will accept all previous credits earned at any other regionally accredited, four-year college or university.
- Students coming from a regionally accredited two-year college can transfer and receive credit for a maximum of 68 total hours.
- Bluefield University has multiple articulation agreements with other colleges and universities; if you have previously studied at one of these schools, this may be considered during the evaluation process.
- Bluefield University has an articulation agreement with the Virginia Community College System. Under the terms of this agreement, students who graduate from Virginia community colleges in a designated Associate of Arts and Sciences or Associate of Sciences degree program and have achieved a GPA of at least 2.5 in their academic work are eligible for automatic acceptance. We will also consider all general education courses not required for a student’s major as meeting our requirements.
- The Bluefield Core is a unique 9-hour block of courses required for incoming freshmen. Transfer students who have not completed a VCCS associate degree but who have completed 32 transferrable hours will be exempt from one of these required classes, COR 1012 – Invitation to Inquiry.
Admission Requirements for Transfer Students
To be considered for acceptance, you need to begin the process by submitting:
- A completed online application. Once we receive your application, you can expect a personal phone call from our Transfer & International Counselor to confirm the details in your application.
- The following documents to document your academic history:
- If you have more than 12 completed GPA hours, we need the transcripts from each college you have attended. Bluefield University accepts students based on a cumulative GPA, so even if your grades were not the best at one school, you must submit a transcript if courses were completed.
- If you have fewer than 12 completed GPA hours, we need a copy of your high school transcript.
- The SAT, CLT, and ACT exams are optional for new students applying to Bluefield University.
- If you have earned college credit through AP testing, dual enrollment, and/or military training, these documents need to be submitted with your other academic records. The Transfer & International Counselor can provide a list of acceptable secondary sources of college credit.
Once we have received your application and all necessary academic transcripts and records, your acceptance to Bluefield University is offered or denied based on our acceptance standards listed above as part of our rolling admissions policy.
We welcome applications for admission from international students. International students with fewer than 12 college credits will be considered international freshman applicants. International Students with 12 or more college credits will be considered international transfer applicants.
To ensure international students have the necessary time to acquire a VISA and arrive prior to the start of classes, students must submit all materials, be accepted, and pay the confirmation fee prior to the following deadlines:
