Bluefield University recently celebrated a historic moment in its 102-year history with the inauguration of its 10th president, Dr. Steve Peterson.
The formal ceremony, held on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 marked the beginning of a new chapter for the university as Dr. Peterson assumed leadership to guide the institution into its next era.
Dr. Peterson officially stepped into the presidency earlier this year, bringing over 30 years of experience in various leadership roles within higher education. As an accomplished administrator, he is well-versed in the challenges and opportunities Christian universities face today.
“Now is the time to continue to innovate and expand the university’s footprint across the region and on a national and global scale,” Peterson said. “We have a unique opportunity to build on Bluefield’s strengths, enhancing the educational experience for both traditional and non-traditional students.”
The ceremony featured academic processions, inspiring speeches, and the formal installation of Dr. Peterson. Distinguished guests from higher education, religious communities, and regional leadership were present, including representatives from Liberty University, Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Baptist General Association of Virginia, local pastors, and Bluefield’s esteemed alumni network and supporters.
As Dr. Peterson takes the helm, he joins a lineage of visionary leaders who have shaped the university since its founding in 1922. His dedication to upholding the university’s mission will guide his leadership as he implements the recently adopted strategic plan.
The Bluefield community embraced this significant occasion, celebrating the new presidency and reaffirming the university’s steadfast commitment to providing Christ-centered education.
