On-Campus Scavenger Hunt Proposal Leads to Students’ Engagement

by | Oct 7, 2024

Bluefield University congratulates students Cameron Justis and Abbie Bradley on their engagement following a proposal in Lansdell Hall on the night of Wednesday, October 2.

“Cameron and I met our freshman year in our first class session for Invitation to Inquiry with Dr. White,” Abbie shared. “We were the only two commuters in the class, and when we talked, we hit it off right away. At the end of class, Cameron awkwardly (and sweetly) asked for my number. We started talking and on Friday, we both auditioned for Elevate.”

Elevate was a student-led Sunday night worship service that was relaunched last year as Bluefield University’s Monday night Home service. After another student assisting with auditions joked about them going on a date, they “decided to spontaneously go on a date,” Abbie added. “We went to Shogun, and then we went to the East River Mountain Overlook, where we saw a heat lightning storm over Bluefield.”

The proposal was a “reverse order scavenger hunt” of their first date, Cameron explained. Cameron recruited several friends, including other BU students, to assist Abbie in making her way to campus, where he popped the question.

“It began at Abbie’s house, where her mom handed her a letter written by me, which sent her to East River Mountain,” Cameron said. “Then, another letter delivered by Laura Horton led her to Shogun, and the letter delivered by Landon Breeden led her to the back of Cruise Hall. That letter, delivered by Katelyn Keys, led her to the chapel where my mother handed her a letter that led to Lansdell 101, where I had flowers and tea lights. There, I read the final letter, which was my proposal.”

Cameron Justis is a junior majoring in business major at Bluefield University. He is also a Roots discipleship group leader, a member of our chapel and Home praise bands, and a student worker in our Information Services & Technology department. Outside of the university, he is a fourth-degree black belt, a certified master in Tang Soo Do, and the owner of Justis Martial Arts. Both he and Abbie faithfully attend Landmark First Church of God in Princeton, West Virginia.

Abbie Bradley is a junior majoring in music and minoring in Christian studies at BU. She is the Discipleship Leader for Bluefield University Student Ministries, overseeing the Roots small group initiative, and a tutor in our Academic Center for Excellence. She is a creative and active member of the Rams community, having starred in the theatre department’s production of Children of Eden and serving as the honorary graphic designer for the Student Government Association.

It is the hope and prayer of our Rams family that Cameron and Abbie continue to grow in faith and love, and we wish them both a lifetime of joy!
